Why Not Simply Abolish NATO?

Tom Daschle, ex leader di maggioranza Senate and advisor to Senator Barack Obama (August 17, 2008)

"Of all the enemies of public liberty war is perhaps the most dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of all others."
James Madison (1751-1836), fourth U.S. president

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a relic of the Cold War. It was incorporated on April 4, 1949 as a defensive alliance of Western European countries with Canada and the United States to protect those countries from the encroachments of the Soviet Union.

Since 1991, however, the Soviet empire with longer exists and Russia has been cooperating economically with Western European countries by providing them with gas, oil and all types of raw materials. This has increased European economic interdependence and thus reduced the need for such a defensive military alliance above and beyond the military systems of self-defense individual European countries.

But the U.S. government does not see it that way. Prefer to retain its role as protector of Europe and haughtiness of the sole superpower in the world. In this sense, NATO is a tool that is well suited for this purpose. But perhaps the world should worry about who goes around the planet with a can of oil in one hand and a box of matches in, pretending to sell fire insurance.

Right now, it is a fact that the government and the nomenklatura of Foreign Affairs of the United States sees NATO as an important intervention tool of American foreign policy in the world. Because in practice many U.S. politicians do not support more the United Nations as the supreme international body dedicated to maintaining world peace, a NATO controlled by the United States is in their eyes a more attractive substitute for the UN to provide a legal cover to their otherwise illegal offensive military undertaken around the world. They prefer full control of an organization such as NATO, even if an institution has become redundant, rather than having to compromise with the United Nations, where the U.S. has still one of the five vetoes on the Security Council.

This is the iron logic behind the purpose of reorganization, reorientation and expansion of NATO to transform it into a flexible policy American foreign. It is another demonstration that redundant institutions have a life of its own. In fact, when the purpose for which they were originally created no longer exists new purposes are invented to make it go forward.

Regarding NATO, the plan is to enlarge and transform it into a political-military offensive against the imperial and the rest of the world dominated by the United States. According to this plan, NATO would expand into Central and Eastern Europe to include not only former Warsaw Pact members (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and Hungary) and many of the ex-Soviet republics ( Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Georgia and Ukraine), but anche in Asia a includere il Giappone, l'Australia, la Nuova Zelanda, la Corea del Sud e forse anche in Medio Oriente per ammettere Israele.

It is not only an idea actively promoted by the neocon Bush-Cheney, but also by the neoconservative advisers to both 2008 American presidential candidates, John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama. In fact, both candidates enthusiastically support the military intervention, and this is mainly because their advisers are from the same neo-conservative environment.
For example, the precipitation with which the Bush-Cheney recklessly promised NATO membership to former Soviet republic of Georgia and have provided support and military supplies is a good example of how NATO is viewed in Washington both major political parties americani. For example, both candidates probably would support the elimination of the clause "no first strike" from the NATO convention. You can rest assured that with either the White House, the world would be less rule-based and less secure, and certainly not better than it was under the unrestrained Bush-Cheney administration.
However, it is difficult to see how this new offensive role for NATO would be in the interests of European countries or Canada. Western Europe in particular has everything to fear from a return to Cold War with Russia and perhaps China. The transformation of NATO from North Atlantic defensive military organization to organization United States-led military offensive will have profound international geopolitical consequences around the world, but particularly in Europe. Europe has a strong economic attraction for Russia. So why embark upon the aggressive policy of the Bush-Cheney, based sull'accerchiamento Russia's military through the expansion of NATO up to Russia's borders and the installation of a missile shield right there beside her? Would not it be better for Europe to develop harmonious economic and political relations with Russia? Why prepare the next war?

As for Canada, under the neocon minority Harper government the country has become a de facto American colony in foreign policy, and this without there having been no debate or referendum. The last thing Canada needs is to continue on that mined road.

In conclusion, it would seem that the humanist idea that sees peace, free trade and international law bases of world order is set aside in favor of a return to great power politics and gunboat diplomacy. So you go back a hundred years.

It is a shame.
